Tokyo transport tickets: IC balance, subway passes and reserved trains

Choose the route first, then check what each card or ticket actually covers.

Start with the stations and railway operators in your actual day. A card, a subway pass and an express-train booking can play different roles in the same trip. This guide explains those roles; the day examples are JapaLens editorial suggestions, not a fare calculation or a ticket purchase.

Four options that do different jobs

Check coverage before comparing prices
OptionRoleBefore choosing
Stored-value transport IC cardSuica deducts the applicable fare from its prepaid balance on supported journeys. Topping up adds money; it does not make travel unlimited.Check the valid area and the actual route. A stored balance does not itself reserve a seat or cover an additional limited-express charge. Tokyo Metro 24-hour TicketUnlimited rides on Tokyo Metro lines for 24 hours from first use.Its coverage is Tokyo Metro. Do not treat it as a Toei Subway, JR or airport-rail ticket. Check the conditions for the format you buy. Official guide ↗
Tokyo Subway TicketCovers Tokyo Metro and Toei Subway for 24, 48 or 72 hours from the start of use within its validity conditions.Check visitor eligibility, purchase/exchange method and ticket format. JR and other operators are outside this ticket’s subway coverage. Official guide ↗
Limited-express / reserved-seat productJR distinguishes the basic fare from the additional charge for a limited express or Shinkansen. Some products combine them.Read whether your purchase includes the basic fare, which train/seat it covers and how to board. Narita Express has reserved-seat cars only. Official guide ↗

For a pass comparison, add the ordinary fares only for journeys the pass covers and compare that total with the current pass price. Add excluded journeys separately. Convenience, extra walking and unnecessary detours also matter; a pass is not automatically cheaper for every itinerary.

An IC card at the gate can represent two different arrangements

On supported ordinary journeys, Suica pays the fare from its balance. JR East’s Shinkansen e-ticket instead involves reserving a product and linking an IC card to it. Loading money onto the card alone does not make that reservation. Follow the instructions for the service and ticket you actually purchased.

JR East also offers Express Train e-ticket (basic fare required), which covers the limited-express portion and needs a separate basic fare arrangement. Check your selected product rather than assuming every e-ticket includes both. The JR East instructions are not a universal boarding method for other operators’ Shinkansen products.

A credit card tapped directly is a separate service

Tokyo Metro provides a Tap to Ride service for eligible cards and devices, subject to station and operator conditions. Its official guide says this service cannot be used to continue from Tokyo Metro onto JR East. It also requires the same card or device for entry and exit; the physical card and a phone carrying the same card number are not interchangeable for that journey.

The service uses adult fares, so check a suitable child-fare method separately for children. If you already hold a pass or another ticket, check the intended gate reader and boarding method before tapping a credit card.

Choose for the day you will actually travel

A nearby neighborhood day

For an Asakusa walk with only a small number of rail journeys, compare paying each fare with the relevant pass. Do not add extra train rides just to use a pass.

Several subway visits

List the planned lines. If both Tokyo Metro and Toei Subway appear, check the pass that covers both rather than a Metro-only ticket. Add any JR or private-rail journey separately.

Airport and reserved train

Choose the airport route and destination first. For Narita Express, confirm the product, basic fare, reserved train and boarding method. Keep the city’s later subway journeys separate from the airport-train decision.

Before heading to the gate

  • Check each traveler’s ticket, age conditions and any seat assignment.
  • Confirm whether the product needs collection, activation or IC-card linking before boarding.
  • For mobile products, check your device and the operator’s boarding instructions before choosing that format. Keep confirmation details accessible.
  • If unsure at the gate, show the actual ticket or reservation to staff before switching payment methods.
