Your first day in Tokyo: arrive with room to breathe

A practical arrival-day plan for Haneda or Narita, without turning your flight day into a full sightseeing day.

Confirm the first nightPlan door to doorKeep visits optional

Start with where you will sleep and how you will reach it. This is a JapaLens editorial checklist, not a live transfer search. It gives no guaranteed immigration time, journey time, fare or room access. Adjust the day for your actual arrival, companions and accommodation conditions.

STEP 01

Before departure: settle the first night

  1. Save your accommodation name, address, contact details and check-in instructions offline. Confirm the latest arrival time with the property; do not assume reception is staffed all night.
  2. If you arrive before check-in, ask whether luggage storage is available and under what conditions. Early room access is a separate question and may cost extra.
  3. Choose one airport-to-hotel route and one fallback. Compare the whole journey, including terminal, transfers, luggage and the final walk, rather than only the main train ride.
STEP 02

At the airport: choose the route that works now

  1. Your flight landing time is not your hotel arrival time. Leave room for arrival procedures, baggage collection, finding the departure point and any waiting time.
  2. Haneda lists Keikyu, Tokyo Monorail, buses and taxis. Narita provides official rail, bus and taxi guidance. Select your actual arrival terminal and hotel destination in the official route information.
  3. For a late arrival, check the last usable connection all the way to your destination. If a delay makes your plan unworkable, review available alternatives and contact the accommodation.
STEP 03

Choose your day after reaching the hotel area

  1. Morning arrival: confirm the baggage arrangement, have a meal and choose one short nearby walk or indoor visit if you feel up to it. Keep room for check-in and rest.
  2. Afternoon arrival: focus on reaching the accommodation, checking in and eating nearby. Add sightseeing only after checking the remaining time and your energy.
  3. Evening arrival: prioritize the transfer and check-in. Confirm food options at the time you expect to arrive instead of making a distant dinner reservation.
STEP 04

Book essentials first, leave optional visits flexible

  1. Check whether your transfer ticket is tied to a particular departure and whether it can be changed after a flight delay. Read luggage conditions and the total fare before paying.
  2. Avoid stacking a prepaid attraction and a restrictive restaurant booking immediately after landing. Choose a later sightseeing day for the one timed visit you most want.
  3. Prepare internet access before you need it: check device compatibility and the provider’s activation instructions. Keep the hotel route and booking details available without a connection.

Before check-in or after check-out: plan your luggage

Choose a collection time before choosing storage. Work back from your next train, airport journey or hotel return, allowing for walking, queues and collecting every bag. The comparisons are editorial planning suggestions; hotel storage depends on the individual property.

Compare drop-off and collection together
OptionWhen to compare itBefore leaving bags
Your hotelCompare when both drop-off and collection fit your route.Ask about storage before check-in or after check-out on your date, collection deadlines, fees and item limits. Keep any claim ticket.
Station lockerCompare when you return through the same part of the station.Check dimensions, payment, maximum period and access hours. Save the locker number, floor and gate side. Retain the key, receipt or IC card needed for collection.
Staffed storage counterCompare if bags do not fit available lockers or a staffed handover suits your plan.Confirm accepted size/weight, space, price and final collection time. Distinguish same-day storage from overnight storage.

Tokyo Station: check inside versus outside the gates

Tokyo Station City lists Gransta B1 storage counters inside the gates and JR EAST Travel Service Center Baggage Storage outside at Marunouchi North. Gransta describes the latter as a service for visitors from abroad. Check that your ticket and route let you return to the chosen facility.

Gransta’s FAQ describes its cloak service as same-day storage. It warns that a locker shown as available online may be occupied when you arrive. Check your chosen counter’s final collection time and keep a fallback.

A practical last-day sequence

  1. Before leaving the hotel, confirm that your bags are accepted and agree the collection deadline. Storage permission does not extend room check-out.
  2. Choose one sightseeing area and a return route to the bags. Keep essential items and the collection method with you.
  3. Collect bags before going to the airport platform or bus stop. Remove an optional stop if you run late.
Delivery is a separate choice. GO TOKYO says airport-to-hotel luggage generally arrives the next day, with same-day options in some cases. Confirm the service, destination, deadline and hotel acceptance, and carry what you need until delivery.

Prepare the rest of your trip
