Stay connected, your way.

A practical starting point. Check current prices, availability and conditions before booking.

Before you buy, activate or return

Use these checks alongside the shortlist above. They are an editorial planning aid, not confirmation that a device or product will work.

Check the exact device, not just the brand

Confirm model, purchase region, eSIM/SIM support and carrier lock with the maker and your carrier. On iPhone, Apple describes the Carrier Lock entry in Settings → General → About. Android checks vary by model.

Separate data from calls and SMS

Check whether a Japanese number, voice calls or SMS are included. A data-only plan does not by itself provide these. Also compare your existing carrier’s roaming terms before buying another product.

Read the activation clock

Installation and activation may be different steps. Ask when validity starts, which time zone applies, how to complete setup and whether Wi-Fi is needed. Keep the provider’s recovery instructions accessible.

Compare usable data and sharing

Read the high-speed allowance, fair-use or speed limits, tethering rules and top-up conditions. If your group separates, do not rely solely on a router carried by one traveler.

Match pickup to your actual arrival

For physical pickup, verify the terminal, floor, counter hours, ID requirements and delayed-flight procedure. Narita’s official directory distinguishes counters by terminal and location. Do not assume a counter stays open for your flight.

Plan charging and return before renting

Check included cables, battery duration, return location, deadline, postage and lost-device or late-return charges. Allow a separate return step before departure; a shared router also needs a charging plan.

Keep an offline fallback

Save your hotel address, arrival route, reservation reference and support contact offline. Test mobile data after activation and follow the provider’s instructions for the correct data line and roaming settings.

Pocket Wi-Fi: a worked preparation example

One provider example, not a price ranking. The notes below refer to the English Wi-Fi RENTAL Store storefront. The Japanese storefront has its own order pages; do not combine conditions from different storefronts.

Airport or hotel pickup

The English Wi-Fi RENTAL Store site requires advance airport orders; deadlines and counter hours vary. Bring your passport for airport pickup. For hotel delivery, the recipient must match the hotel reservation name and the hotel name must be entered.

Make return part of departure day

The English receive/return page says to use the supplied prepaid envelope and return by 8 am on the day after the rental ends. It instructs airport users to return before security. Confirm your actual return location and keep all supplied accessories together.

Payment and a changed itinerary

The English rental-system page lists credit-card payment only. Its homepage asks customers to request changes or cancellation before dispatch, giving their order number. Read the current conditions for your chosen storefront before paying.

Planning suggestion: ask your hotel whether it accepts parcels before ordering, save the order reference offline and choose a return point before going to the airport. No order, availability or connection test has been made by JapaLens.
