| Place | Calm | Busiest | Our tip |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fushimi Inari | Before 8:00, after 17:00 | 10:00–15:00 | Open all night. Climb past the first gates; the crowd thins with every flight of steps. |
| Kiyomizu-dera | First hour after opening, last hour before closing | 10:00–16:00 | Walk up through quieter lanes, not Kiyomizu-zaka. |
| Arashiyama bamboo grove | Before 8:30 | 10:00–16:00 | Then walk north into Sagano, where the day-trippers rarely go. |
| Kinkaku-ji | Last 90 minutes | 10:00–14:00 | Pair it with Ryoan-ji and Ninna-ji on the same road. |
| Ginkaku-ji and the Philosopher’s Path | Opening time | 11:00–15:00 | Start at Ginkaku-ji and walk south. |
| Gion | Early morning, after dark | Late afternoon | Stay on the public streets; the side lanes are private. |
| Nishiki Market | 10:00–11:00 | 12:00–15:00 | Some shops close on Wednesdays. |
| Tofuku-ji (autumn) | Opening time on weekdays | Mid-November weekends | In peak leaf season, arrive at opening on a weekday and check the temple’s notices for the season’s hours and fees. |

Three rules that do most of the work
- Put the most famous place of the day first or last, never at midday.
- Plan two areas a day, three at most. Crossing town by bus at noon can take 45 minutes.
- Eat lunch at 11:15 or after 13:30.
