Kansai International Airport (KIX) sits on an island in Osaka Bay. Both railway stations, JR and Nankai, are across the walkway from the second floor of Terminal 1. Terminal 2, used by some low-cost airlines, is linked to Terminal 1 by a free shuttle bus of about 7–9 minutes, so allow extra time if you land there.
To Kyoto: the JR Haruka limited express
The Haruka runs from Kansai Airport to Tennoji, Osaka (Umeda), Shin-Osaka and Kyoto without a change. The airport’s official guide gives about 75 minutes to Kyoto, with trains every 30–40 minutes from about 9:00 to 20:00 and hourly outside those times. The last departure from the airport is around 22:16.
Reserved or non-reserved
Haruka has reserved and non-reserved cars plus a Green Car. Reserve for busy seasons and for the longer ride to Kyoto.
ICOCA & HARUKA
JR West sells a discount Haruka ticket for overseas visitors bundled with an ICOCA transport card (¥500 of the card price is a refundable deposit). Check the current conditions with JR West before buying.
Japan Rail Pass
The nationwide Japan Rail Pass covers the Haruka at no extra charge, including reserved seats.
Staying near Gion or Kawaramachi? From Kyoto Station you still need a subway, bus or taxi. Check the final leg before choosing between the train and a bus to your hotel area.
To Osaka: Namba, Umeda or Tennoji
Namba: Nankai
The airport recommends Nankai for Namba. The all-reserved limited express rapi:t takes 34 minutes at its fastest; regular airport express trains are cheaper and take a little longer. Where to exchange a rapi:t e-ticket depends on where you bought it.
Umeda and Shin-Osaka: JR
For Osaka (Umeda) and Shin-Osaka, the airport recommends JR: the Haruka (about 45 and 50 minutes) or the cheaper Kansai Airport Rapid Service with a change for Umeda.
Tennoji
Both the Haruka (about 30–35 minutes) and the Kansai Airport Rapid Service stop at Tennoji, where you can change to the Midosuji subway line.

Limousine buses: seats and luggage handled for you
Airport limousine buses leave from outside the first floor of Terminal 1 and from Terminal 2. Staff load your suitcases (up to two per person) into the luggage hold. Buy tickets at the vending machines or counters by the stops, which accept credit cards; IC cards can be tapped on board.
Kyoto Station (Hachijo exit)
About 85–90 minutes from Terminal 1, roughly every 20–30 minutes. Adult one-way ¥2,800. Buses to the airport need a reservation.
Osaka Station (Umeda)
About an hour to the Umeda stops, with frequent departures. Some buses continue to hotels in the area.
Universal Studios Japan
Direct buses run to Universal City and the Tempozan/Kaiyukan area.
Valuables, laptops, cameras and power banks must not go in the luggage hold. Keep them with you.
Before you go
- Check your arrival terminal. Terminal 2 adds a shuttle ride before you reach the trains.
- Late flight? The last Haruka leaves around 22:16 and the last Kyoto bus around 23:20 (Terminal 1). If immigration runs late, compare a taxi or an airport hotel.
- Buy or top up an ICOCA card at the JR or Nankai station counters; ICOCA cannot be used on the Shinkansen and needs separate express tickets for limited expresses.
- Large suitcases are easier on the bus or a reserved Haruka seat than on a crowded rapid train.
