PLAN YOUR VISIT

A trip with room to explore

Give each district time. A day in eastern Kyoto and a separate visit to Arashiyama usually make a more comfortable plan than rushing between both.

Choose your neighborhood

01 / AREA

Higashiyama

For temple walks and historic streets.

Build your walk around Kiyomizu-dera and the surrounding slopes. Wear comfortable shoes, keep a rest stop in your plan, and respect signs marking private lanes or photography restrictions.

Allow half a day or more. Steps and slopes make a short map distance feel longer.

02 / AREA

Central Kyoto

For food, shopping and a flexible base.

Plan a market-area walk and a proper meal rather than treating every shop as a takeaway stop. Central streets are useful for a shorter day or for returning to your hotel between outings.

Compare Kyoto Station for intercity travel with central subway access for city walks.

03 / AREA

Saga & Arashiyama

For riverside scenery and a slower walk.

Choose a small loop around Togetsukyo Bridge and the bamboo-grove area. Leave time to sit down, and stay on designated paths to protect the landscape.

Set aside a separate half day. Compare rail access before choosing a crowded bus route.

A relaxed one-day plan

An editorial route idea, not a timed tour. Adjust it for weather, opening days and your walking pace.

  1. Morning

Start with one temple visit in Higashiyama.

  2. Lunch

Pause for a seated meal and check your walking energy.

  3. Afternoon

Continue through nearby streets; choose a tea break rather than another distant district.

  4. Evening

Return to central Kyoto for dinner; save Arashiyama for another day.

Before you go

Food

Try a meal centered on tofu, seasonal vegetables or Japanese cooking. Ingredients such as dashi can contain fish even in vegetable dishes; confirm dietary needs before ordering.

Where to stay

For rail arrivals and departures, compare the Kyoto Station area. For dining and city walks, compare central Kyoto. In historic districts, check luggage access and the final walk to the property.

Getting around

Combine rail or subway with walking and a short bus ride when needed. Do not assume that a bus-only route is easiest during busy periods. Leave space for slopes, queues and rest stops.
