What this area is like
Kushiro Marsh is Japan’s largest wetland, and red-crowned cranes gather nearby in winter. Inland, Lake Akan has an Ainu village and marimo moss balls, and Lake Mashu is famous for its clear blue water.
Plan your visit
Fly to Kushiro or take the JR limited express from Sapporo (about four hours). A car makes the lakes much easier.
