01 / AREA

Yokohama

For a waterfront city and Chinatown.

Walk from Minato Mirai’s waterfront to the red-brick warehouses and Yamashita Park, then eat in Yokohama Chinatown, one of the largest in Japan. The Cup Noodles Museum is popular with families.

About 30 minutes from Tokyo or Shibuya by train; the Minatomirai Line links the main sights.

02 / AREA

Kamakura

For temples, the Great Buddha and the sea.

The bronze Great Buddha of Kotoku-in sits outdoors, and Tsurugaoka Hachimangu is the city’s main shrine. Hase-dera has sea views and hydrangeas in June; the Enoden train runs along the coast to Enoshima.

Weekends are crowded and the Enoden can be full; start early and keep the day to one side of town.

Hakone

For hot springs and Mount Fuji views.

A loop by mountain railway, cable car, ropeway and lake boat passes Owakudani’s volcanic vents and Lake Ashi. The Hakone Open-Air Museum and many hot-spring inns are along the way.

Odakyu Romancecar runs from Shinjuku to Hakone-Yumoto. Fuji views depend on the weather; clearer mornings in winter are best.

Before you go

Food

Try Chinatown dumplings, Yokohama-style ramen, shirasu in Kamakura and black eggs in Owakudani.

Where to stay

Yokohama has many hotels; Kamakura has fewer, so many visitors stay in Yokohama or Tokyo. Book a Hakone ryokan for the hot-spring experience.

Getting around

JR lines connect Tokyo with Yokohama and Kamakura. Odakyu runs to Hakone; the Hakone Freepass covers most of the loop transport.
