Kagoshima City & Sakurajima

For an active volcano across the bay.

Sakurajima smokes across the bay, a 15-minute ferry ride away; ferries run around the clock. Sengan-en garden borrows the volcano as its backdrop, and the city has hot springs in many public baths.

Volcanic ash falls on some days; carry a mask or umbrella if ash is forecast.

Ibusuki

For a sand bath by the sea.

At Ibusuki, staff bury you in naturally heated sand on the beach for about 10 minutes. Mount Kaimon, a cone-shaped volcano, rises to the south.

The Ibusuki no Tamatebako sightseeing train runs from Kagoshima-Chuo.

Yakushima

For ancient cedar forests.

A World Heritage island of mossy forests and cedars over 1,000 years old. Shiratani Unsuikyo is a moderate walk; the Jomon Sugi trek takes about 10 hours return.

It rains often; bring waterproof gear. Book ferries or flights ahead in busy seasons.
