PLAN YOUR VISIT

A trip with room to explore

Iwate is Honshu’s largest prefecture. The Tohoku Shinkansen links Morioka and Ichinoseki (for Hiraizumi), so the inland sights pair well in two days.

01 / AREA

Hiraizumi

For World Heritage temples and gardens.

Chuson-ji’s Konjikido is a small hall covered in gold leaf, and Motsu-ji preserves a Pure Land garden. Both are part of the Hiraizumi World Heritage site.

Chuson-ji sits on a wooded hill; wear walking shoes for the slope.

Morioka

For a castle-town walk and three noodle dishes.

A compact city with castle ruins in Iwate Park and old merchant streets. Morioka is known for wanko soba, reimen cold noodles and jajamen.

Wanko soba restaurants serve small bowls until you put the lid on; check the course and price first.

Sanriku Coast

For coastal scenery and memorial sites.

Jodogahama in Miyako has white rocks and clear water. Along the coast, memorial museums such as the Tsunami Memorial Museum in Rikuzentakata explain the 2011 earthquake and tsunami.

Distances along the coast are long; rail and bus links are limited, so check connections or rent a car.

Before you go

Food

Try wanko soba, Morioka reimen, jajamen and seafood from the Sanriku coast.

Where to stay

Morioka is the most convenient base, with Shinkansen access. Hot-spring areas such as Tsunagi Onsen are a short bus ride away.

Getting around

Use the Tohoku Shinkansen between Ichinoseki and Morioka. Reaching the coast takes a long bus or rail journey; plan it as a separate day.
