What this area is like
Sagae is at the heart of Yamagata’s cherry farms, with picking in June and July. Mount Gassan, one of the three sacred Dewa mountains, keeps enough snow for skiing into summer.

A car is the easiest way around. The Gassan ski area opens in spring once the road is cleared.
